Holdup in Hillbrow

David Goldblatt

http://www.upto35.com

This proposal introduces a concept in which the value of social intercourse in a project of this nature is given paramount importance. Since the first round, the project went through a process that clarified a lot of its ambiguities. More than the others, it kept its emphasis on a balance between private and collective aspects. While maintaining a quiet and modest presence, 18 steps is a very precise and beautiful project, with a highly conceptual idea about life in a community of 18 students and on account this and to its suitability to this site, the jury decided to award it the competition prize.

rooms

I hope you are enjoying the last moments of your holidays…
For those who want to have a look before we start
I attach the sites for our next project.
We will take a walk together on Monday, so please be prepared.
Shoes, water, no short skirts recommended, cameras at own risk as usual.
Only take what you need with you.
I am trying to see if we can take a Wits shuttle to ConHill/ Esselen Clinic.
Otherwise we walk from Wits to Esselen Street to Alexandra Street and back.
You will only choose ONE site for your design.
However, before you choose, you have to see both in context.
They have different challenges in terms of
site, related programme, form and size.
We have a guest speaker, Paul Jenkins, on Monday from 11.30-1pm,
please be all present for that occasion.
From 10.15 – 11.15amhand out and intro to rooms project.
From 1.30 – 4pm: walking Hillbrow.

See you Monday.

WOOD hand in

general comments for all
pin up construction hand in with design hand in
site plan 1:500 with larger context
ground floor plan 1: 50 with immediate context (site)
no foundating in sections for design
doors open into a room (not into the corridor)
a staircase has a landing in front of an entry -
you do not stand on the last tread to fumble with your keys to open the door
staircases are shared spaces of circulation -
give people space to arrive (where the staircase starts and ends)
do not use the same viewpoint for the axo and the perspective
- axo is great for overall structure (outside)
- perspective is good for inside/ outside connection or inside space
- photocollage shows atomsphere, life and energy
label drawings, name, scale, orientation
rotate the site, keep plans parallel to page
give your drawings enough space
make beautiful drawings not tick off duty drawings

your 1: 50 model needs time and care: it should be well made and detailed
mangage your time, do most important things first: plan section elevation
then model 1: 50, then 3d
model 1:100/ 200 is concept model/ process model
it does not need to be re-build

text is about your idea and spatial development, describe your project
