Brief:
In an age of migration and dissolving boundaries between the rural and the urban, you are asked to design and build a 1:1 shelter for city dwelling birds in Johannesburg.
You have to develop your design idea around 3 areas of research
identify birds, their life and habits in your surrounding
• find and test suitable urban sites
• choose materials that allow you to produce the ‘house’ within one week and the birds to use it according to their needs.

Deliveries:
Birds House 1:1
Drawings (section, plan, elevation) 1:10 – 1:1 (depending on size)
Documentation of house on site (photographs as story board)
Manual ‘how to…’ (can be combined with drawings or storyboard)

Aim:
To design a small and intelligent architectural object within the larger context that is custom made for the the bird as client.
To develop an understanding of scale, from 1:1 to urban.
To translate the design  idea into a makeable and usable object that proves understanding of architectural detail.
