Project 1: 24H Space

•Project: 24H Space
•Format: A0
•Medium: Pencil Drawings
•Dates: Hand Out: MO 09Feb, Crit: THU 12Feb, Hand In: MO16Feb

What is the minimum space between a bed, a shelf and the wall in a bedroom? What is a big space? Who decides the borderline between a comfortable, a bearable and a not acceptable room? Do you know how many different spaces you pass through within 24h?

The project is about understanding and recording your personal space. Our physical relationship to nature, buildings, open space and everyday objects sets up an immediate way in which to understand scale, comfort and materiality. Usually, people develop this spatial sense unconsciously over time. However, you as an architect need to be able to observe, analyse and use your professional knowledge and spatial awareness in the design process.
On a 24 hour chart, you will reconstruct the anatomy of a typical day in your life on 6 different layers (time, programme, furniture, space, min. requirements, evaluation). This chart will be your reference and tool for the following projects.
Requirements: All activities and spaces have to be mapped in a consistent and convincing way. All spaces and pieces of furniture/ objects have to be represented in plan and section/ elevation, all with dimensions (length/ height/ width). Furniture has to be placed in the context or rooms, rooms have to be placed in the context of building, the building has to placed in the context of site. Make indication of light conditions and requirements where necessary. 3Ds are desirable. The chart has to communicate all information without any verbal presentation.
All submissions have to be pinned up before 13 o’clock in the studio on Monday, 16 February 2009.
A copy of the chart, reduced to A3 size sheet(s), has to be submitted to the staff at 12 o’clock promptly.
Late entries will not be accepted and be marked 0%.
