Project 2: Bunny Hole

• Project: Bunny Hole
• Format: Model 1:10, Drawings A2
• Medium: Model: Corrugated Cardboard, Wood, Drawing: Pencil, Ink
• Dates: Hand Out: MO 16Feb, Crit: THU 19Feb, MO 23Fe
Hand In: THU 26Feb
Why don't rabbits burrow rectangular burrows? Why didn't early man make rectangular caves?
Archigram
The project is about creating a three dimensional place to sleep, wash, eat, study and meet a friend in two different
geometries. The space has to be a continuous void which will be created
a) by subtracting mass from a given volume and
b) by adding modular elements to become that same volume.
Base are your body, your minimum space and your wishes which you have mapped in the previous exercise.
You will start to work from models, use sketches to develop the space and finally draw plan, sections and elevations of your
design.
Your given volume is the size of a barking bay or a garage.
2,5m wide, 5m long, 2.5m high.
This is your ‘solid’ which you will develop inside out according to the above requirements. The negative space will be your
‘bedbathlivingstudyroom’. You have to have at least 1 entry/ exit.
a) Model out of layers of corrugated card board, 4mm thick.
Relief Horizontal: Cut 26 sheets of 25cm wide and 50 cm long corrugated card board, 4mm thick.
Design your space according to body/ programme needs as a walk/ climb/ crawl through the solid by subtracting space
from your layers. Imagine yourself carving out. Make sure you can stand, sit, lie down where you need to.
b) Model of modular blocks
Rebuild the volume of model a by using of modular blocks (wood) and adding them. The solid of 2,5mx5mx2,5m has to be
recognizable.
Draw your design in sections, plans and elevation. Scale 1:10.
Identify the negative space, the void and present it as solid, as positive space, preferably as model, otherwise as
axonometric drawing.
The project will be judged on
a) development of understanding of solid and void
b) spatial qualities of the continuous void, based on body, programme, min.space and wishes.
c) quality of spatial representation in model
d) quality of spatial representation in drawing
All submissions have to be pinned up before 13 o’clock in the studio on Thursday, 26 February 2009.
Late entries will not be accepted and be marked 0%.
