The Kliptown
housing workshop was an initiative funded by Urban Dynamics /CoJ Housing
Department (JDA) within the larger urban design framework for the future
development of Kliptown by ASM Architects and Urban Designers and Cohen Judin Architects.
The idea was to develop alternative strategies to the ‘one house-one plot’ RDP
model. blacklines designed a unit that starts ‘top-down’ and provides a first
floor with a habitable roof, that can be completed on ground level according to
budget, timeframe and needs of the owner. The unit can be free standing,
semi-detached and transform into a row house, expanding further on the ground
floor over time, depending on context and site.
